Peterborough--Meadowvale Park

Peterborough--Meadowvale Park

Peterborough, Ontario

About this Location

Meadowvale Park is situated on the east side of the Otonabee River in the north end of Peterborough.  There is a paved bike path on the west side of the park, but most birders take the small, but well-worn path that follow the river's edge, and a few offshoot trails in the northern portion of the park. There is a soccer field and a disc-golf course in the middle of the park, and a small stream that passes through the park and empties into the river at the south end.  The north end of the park has some cultural meadow habitat, a small stand of deciduous forest and a pine plantation.

Although the park is relatively small, the proximity to the river and the dense thickets can provide considerable bird diversity in the spring and fall.  The cedars at the tip of the point, as well as the pine plantation at the north end can be great spots for spring warblers.  The park is also a good option throughout the winter for ducks, geese and other waterbirds.

Some of the notable bird highlights include migrating Golden-winged Warbler, Barrow's Goldeneye, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher and Black-crowned Night-heron.

The park can be accessed from the end of Frances Stewart Rd or from the bike trail on the east side.
