About this Location

The West Branch Wetland Preserve is located off First Street and OH-5 in Newton Falls. The 67 acres have 25 acres in a flood plain and 20 acres in wetlands. Trumbull County MetroParks acquired the area working with Western Reserve Land Conservancy and using a Clean Ohio grant.

Property stakes are seen in the area along the elevated old New York Central Railroad line to the West end of the property. The West Branch of the Mahoning River marks the North boundary. First Street marks the East Boundary. There are several trails that “circle” the area.

First Street crosses a bridge just above a parking area and turn around used by anglers for years. A short walk along the road is required to reach the new MetroParks parking lot.

Notable Trails

Trails are being developed in this newly acquired MetroPark. The existing trails are primitive for the most part and appear to be old off-road vehicle trails. A loop trail begins about 20 yards off the new parking lot. The loop trail is easiest to walk to the river. Walking the trail clockwise is in need of improvements due to downed trees on multiple side trails and uncertainty which trails are still in the park.
