Birch Hill WMA

About this Location

With 7,400 acres in many parcels, the Birch Hill Wildlife Management Area includes diverse habitats - mixed hardwood and conifer forests, open fields, brushlands, and shallow-water grass hummock marshes. Portions of the Millers River and the Otter River flow through the area, both stocked with trout, and native brook trout thrive in numerous cold-water streams. Other wildlife found here includes deer, red and gray fox, snowshoe hare, aquatic fur-bearers, great blue heron, waterfowl, various raptors, turkey, grouse, woodcock, stocked pheasant, and numerous nongame species. This WMA abuts the even larger Birch Hill Dam area, and together these lands offer significant protection to the Millers River watershed and recreation to human visitors.

From MA-2, take Exit 19, and go left on MA-2A/US-202. Take the first right onto Royalston Road and go left on MA-68. Go through South Royalston Center, and turn right on Winchendon Road to the Wildlife Management Area sign on the right.

About Birch Hill Reservoir

See all hotspots at Birch Hill Reservoir

Birch Hill Dam is a project of the US Army Corps of Engineers. Besides flood risk management, a significant benefit of the dam is that the 4,384-acre reservoir area provides open space for public recreation. Since 1976, the Corps of Engineers has leased most of the reservoir area (4,221 acres) to the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) for recreation and fish and wildlife purposes, including the popular Lake Dennison Campground and Day Use Area. Under the supervision of DCR, the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife stocks fish and pheasants and promotes healthy wildlife populations within the reservoir area for public hunting and fishing.
