Spread across a wild landscape offering spectacular views of Mount Katahdin, Katahdin Woods and Waters invites discovery of its rivers, streams, woods, flora, fauna, geology, and the night skies that have attracted humans for millennia. 

The rivers, wetlands, ponds, and forests in Katahdin Woods and Water National Monument are home to a rich diversity of life. Moose, black bears, Canada lynx, and river otters are just a few of the mammals that call the monument home. Atlantic salmon and brook trout swim in the waters. 

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument is open year-round. From mid-November to late May, the north entrance and Katahdin Loop Road are closed to wheeled vehicles. Two gates on the Swift Brook Road leading to the southern sections of the monument are managed by a neighboring timber company and may be closed to wheeled vehicles as well from mid-November to late May. There is currently no entrance fee for Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. There is limited cellular data access within the monument. There is no public wifi within the monument. Public wifi may be available in surrounding communities.
