Tips for Birding

The riparian corridor along Artillery St. is the prime habitat here to check in the fall for migrants. The cypress groves can also be productive. In addition, the many phone lines can be scanned for species of interest (bluebirds, flycatchers, the occasional shrike, etc.).

Birds of Interest

This is a good location year-round for Western Bluebirds. In fall and winter, American Kestrel can sometimes be seen hunting from atop the Sloat Monument. The extensive grassy areas here attract Canada Goose flocks, with the occasional Cackling Goose in tow. Great Blue Heron can often be found hunting in the field for vertebrates. Various vagrant warblers and other passerines have occurred in the riparian (and elsewhere) in the fall.

About this Location

The Lower Presidio Historical Park is an under-birded site that is worth visiting. Habitats here include grassy fields, oaks, cypresses, and riparian. (Please note that while the Monterey Harbor is easily visible from the lower Presidio, birds observed on or over the ocean should not be entered to the Presidio hotspot.)
