About this Location

Knox Woods State Nature Preserve, a small mixed hardwood forest, is dominated by exceptionally large sugar maple, black oak, red oak, shagbark hickory, and black walnut trees.

  • Mixed mesophytic forest

Several large specimens of tulip tree, black gum, white oak, white ash, and wild black cherry are also present. Heavy grazing in the past has unfortunately reduced the abundance and diversity of spring wildflowers.

Located in Knox County less than 1 mile northeast of Mount Vernon on the south side of US-36. A parking lot is present at the rear of the Knox County Opportunity Center and a trail system starts from the parking lot. This site is managed by the Knox County Park District.
