Tips for Birding

Consistently seen are a very large group of black vultures with a few turkey vultures. Osprey are also very common. A scope would be useful for identifying water birds across the lake. Next to the lake and parking lot is a small area of flowers and grasses that has a lot of red-winged blackbirds and song sparrows. There is a creek on the west side of the large lake that has a path alongside. This path can get very wet with some pretty tall grass so ticks can be a problem. In the park's northwest corner there are a few small fields that have many sparrows, indigo buntings, and finches. In the forested parts, the usual summer songbirds are common.

About this Location

Mounts Park is a 200+ acre park located on Stubbs Mill Road. The park has two catch and release fishing lakes, ball fields, and mulched walk trails. In 2021 benches were installed around both lakes to view the park and wildlife. There are four trail loops with lengths between 0.2 and 1.4 miles with the 0.3-mile lake overlook loop having an intermediate/moderate level of difficulty.
