Tips for Birding

Fairly easy walking along the creekside, just be aware of roots and cypress knees that extend into the trail.  Many birds in this area can be quite high in the treetops, but the parking lot behind Community Pizza is situated atop a small cliff that provides an elevated viewing area to alleviate warbler neck.

Currently (Nov 2023) the short "birding area" trail on the map is undeveloped.

Birds of Interest

Belted and Green Kingfishers can be seen along creek.  In spring and summer, Red-eyed Vireo, Yellow-throated Warbler, and Yellow-throated Vireo are often singing high in the cypress trees.  Summer Tanagers and Yellow-billed Cuckoos and be found along the trail.

About this Location

The City of Wimberley has developed 7.24 acres of land along Cypress Creek into a protected preserve and nature trail. This park is located immediately east of the Wimberley Square, bordered by Cypress Creek and Old Kyle Road. The park was acquired in 2001 by the City and features a walking trail along Cypress Creek connecting to Blue Hole Regional Park. At the time of the acquisition, a conservation easement was entered into between the City of Wimberley and the Wimberley Valley Watershed Association.

In summer evenings, a Mexican Free-tailed Bat emergence can be seen around the main bridge over Cypress Creek.

Public restroom available at Square "Pocket park" entrance, along with wheelchair ramp leading to hard packed dirt trail.
