Tips for Birding

You're on top of the world on this road. It starts out a huge high prairie. In the winter, look for Ferruginous Hawk and Burrowing Owls sitting on posts. About 18 miles from the turn off in Marfa you come down to a corral. This is a good place for sparrows, blackbirds, and maybe a Merlin chasing them around. On the way there you find patches of creosote. You can't miss the distinct green from the surrounding brown grass. Sagebrush Sparrows are usually found here in the winter. Always be on the lookout for flocks of Lark Buntings and Horned Larks and maybe Chestnut-collared Longspurs. This is a place birders have found Baird's Sparrows. About 28 miles in is your highest point in the road. It reaches over 6000 feet, and it's still open prairie. But the view of Chinati Peak and the Pinto Canyon area is more than awesome. Then the road drops down to what has been labeled Cleveland Flat, which should be it's own eBird Hotspot. If you continue on past that then you'll come to the end of pavement of RR2810, and it turns into Pinto Canyon Road.
