Little Lake--Mark Street Boat Launch/Rogers Cove

Little Lake--Mark Street Boat Launch/Rogers Cove

131 Maria St., Peterborough, Ontario

Birds of Interest

The views of the lake, especially from Mark St are very good and offer the best look from the north shore of the lake for migrant waterbirds; ducks in early spring, especially right as the ice is going out, and gulls in winter when they will often roost in a large flock on the ice. Most species of waterfowl have been observed from this location and Peterborough's only Slaty-backed Gull was found here.

The wooded sections can be very good in migration for migrant songbirds, particularly warblers.

About this Location

This location covers two side-by-side location: Rogers Cove Park and the Mark St boat launch.

Mark Street boat launch is a boat ramp and dock at the foot of Mark St. You can drive right up to the boat launch and most birders just drive right up and view from here. You technically are not supposed to park here (you can park at Rogers Cove) but if you're standing by your vehicle it is fine. This location offers an excellent vantage of Little Lake.

Rogers Cove is a city park with a relatively large (free) parking lot. In summer, there is a splash pad in the park and washroom facilities but these are closed much of the year. There is also a supervised swimming beach (in the summer) and a playground. The main attraction for birders are the large cottonwoods and other trees along the shoreline as well as views of the lake itself.
