Blue River Parkway Trail (E. 139th St. Trailhead)

Blue River Parkway Trail (E. 139th St. Trailhead)

About this Location

This location provides access to the southernmost trail of the Blue River Parkway trail system. The 139th Street entrance is used as an access point to the Blue River trails by Saddle and Sirloin, a private equestrian club on Holmes Road to the south of 139th Street. The private club provides trail rides and horse stables, as well as shotgun shooting sports. There is little or no parking and a gate that cannot be blocked. Just east (to the right) of the gate, an equestrian entrance joins the substation access road. It may be walked about 1/10 of a mile to access a multi-use bicycle/equestrian/pedestrian trail along the Blue River. Just after passing a pond on the right, look for the equestrian trail on the left. After a few yards, it intersects the multi-use trail under the transmission line right-of-way. The pond on the substation access road may have waterfowl. The same multi-use trail can also be accessed from Blue Ridge Boulevard to the north. Park at the Brown Recreation Area (see other birding hotspot description for that site) and walk east across the bridge across the Blue River. The trail entrance is on the left and visible from the intersection of Blue Ridge Boulevard and Tracy Avenue. Follow the trail west from Tracy and turn left to walk under the Blue Ridge Boulevard bridge.

Notable Trails

A loop trail extends south from Blue Ridge Boulevard to a transmission line right of way. The west side of the loop stays mostly close to the Blue River floodplain and the east side traverses upland terrain. Habitats on the trail are all forested. A map of the Blue River Parkway trail system may be found at The Trails | Urban Trail Co. | Kansas City Trails . A map of the Blue River Parkway County Park may be found under the Brown Athletic Field hotspot description.
