Animas is located at the junction of NM-9 and NM-338. The town was founded by the Spanish around 1753 and became part of Mexico in 1821. It later joined the United States with the Gadsden Purchase of 1853. Animas is situated in a valley surrounded by mountains and near the Continental Divide. Animas has a rich Native American history and many archeological sites nearby.
