About this Location

Located in the northeast corner of Boxford, a portion of Johnson Pond (7.8 acres) is situated in Boxford with the remainder (147 acres) in Groveland. The Pond is bordered on the northwest by Lakeshore Road/Center Street and on the southeast by Washington Street. Johnson’s is a natural Great Pond that is fed by many springs and runoff and connects to Hovey’s Pond through a small stream. The northern outlet of the Pond finds its way to the Merrimac River. In its distant past, the Pond’s waters were used to operate textile mills in Groveland. The Pond is used as a reservoir for neighboring communities and much of the shoreline is bounded by forests and meadows.

The waters of Johnson Pond accommodate a variety of watercraft including small boats, canoes, and kayaks. Fishermen frequently ply the waters in search of rumored bass of up to five pounds. Pickerel, perch, and sunfish are also present. Access is available at an excellent parking and boat launch area located 1.3 miles from the intersection of Main Street in Boxford and Lakeshore Road. Early arrival, particularly on the weekends, is recommended as the lot fills up quickly.

Veasey Memorial Park occupies 47 acres along the shore of Johnson Pond. Named for local textile magnate, Arthur D. Veasey, whose mills supplied blankets to the Union Army during the Civil War, the Memorial Park now features several well-equipped buildings which may be rented for business meetings, fundraisers, weddings, and assorted other gatherings. The extensive grounds include a wide variety of flora and fauna and are a local favorite of birders and nature lovers. Ownership of this unique property included the Sisters of Mercy as a home for female immigrants and women with special needs.
The Town of Groveland acquired the property in 1996.
