Oak Lawn Cemetery, Somerville

Oak Lawn Cemetery, Somerville

15984 State Highway 36 Somerville, Texas

Tips for Birding

Oak Lawn is a bit manicured and may be somewhat limited for birds. The large trees, however, may hold surprises, especially during spring or fall migration.

Be sure to continue to bird westward on County Road 422 (Church Street) and also at the Mexican Cemetery.

If you submit a eBird checklist from this hotspot please make a comment whether you birded the additional area and what, if any, birds you saw in those locations for future birders.

In simple terms, please help to make clear whether the birds you saw were in Oak Lawn proper, along the county road or at the Mexican Cemetery.

Birds of Interest

Cardinals, titmice, chickadees, wrens and sparrows.

About this Location

The Oak Lawn Cemetery runs mostly perpendicular from State Highway 36. So the length of the cemetery parallels Church Street also known as County Road 422..

There are some large trees in the cemetery.

At the far western end of the cemetery, another gate leads back to County Road 422 (Church Street).

Turn left (west) on Church Street. At the time of this writing, there was good thickets on the fence line on either side of the street to it's end where it turns left (south).

Immediately on the north side of County Road 422/Church Street at this corner is another cemetery with a sign above the gate that reads Mexican Cemetery Association.

This cemetery appears to have more understory vegetation and more thickets along the fence line, leading to what may be better habitat for birds.

There is a large parking lot where one could park to walk the cemetery and surrounding area.
