116th Ave and 8th St. wetland

Martin, Michigan 49070

Tips for Birding

Use caution when parking along the edge of 8th St next to the large pond that is south of 116th. There are a few deep, but not easily seen, holes to be wary of. There is a drive entrance to the field on 8th St. (just south of 116th) that is a nice spot to park. Other good places to pull off the road are along 8th St (north of 116th Ave).

Birds of Interest

In appropriate seasons, the two ponds host a revolving assortment of shorebird and waterfowl species. Herons, Egrets, Cormorants, and Ospreys are also attracted by the abundant population of goldfish.
Notable species that have made an appearance here include Vermillion Flycatcher, Marbled Godwit, and Yellow-headed Blackbird. Cackling, Greater White-fronted, and Snow Geese have also been seen here. Glossy Ibis also visited the separate pond on 8th St, just north of 116th Ave (on 8th St.) and over the hill.

About this Location

There are two wetland ponds at the intersection of 116th Avenue and 8th Street. Two additional ponds on 8th St. are located in very close proximity (though not visible from the intersection of 116th Ave and 8th St) and are frequently lumped together by birders in their checklists for this hotspot. The two additional ponds are both on the east side of 8th St. One is found by driving to the crest of the hill to the south of 116th Ave, and the other by cresting the slight hill to the north of 116th Ave. Between these additional ponds, the northern one is the most bird-able from the road and hosts the most variety of shorebirds and waterfowl. Be sure to check this pond when birding this hotspot.
