Peterborough--Omemee Rotary Rail Trail

Peterborough--Omemee Rotary Rail Trail

Tips for Birding

Walk or cycle the trail early in the morning when the number of other trail users may be fewer.

Birds of Interest

Generally, this is just a good location to observe a good variety of birds but where the trail passes by the larger Stockdale Rd wetlands marsh birds of several species may be encountered, including American Bittern, Virginia Rail, Sora and Marsh Wren.

About this Location

This hotspot begins on the west side of Ackison Rd and extends 3.6 km west to Hwy 7, crossing Lily Lake Rd at around the 2 km mark. The trail is wide and level and surfaced with limestone screenings. It is a very popular trail with runners, cyclists and dog walkers and can at times be very busy. The trail runs through cedar thickets, mixed swamp and open agricultural fields and passes by sections of the Stockdale Road marsh in the vicinity of the Lily Lake Rd crossing. Although Ackison Road is posted with ‘No Parking’ signs at the trail crossing, the gravel road shoulders are wide and are regularly used for parking by trail users. Ackison Road is a very busy road with vehicles often traveling in excess of the posted speed limit, so be extremely careful crossing the road. Note that all property on either side of the trail is in private ownership and should not be entered.
