When birding John Simpson, there are two main trails that you can go on.
The first one, and also the main trail, is behind the basketball court at the very back of the park. When birding this trail, it is suggested to go all the way down the main trail that begins after the basketball court (Stampede Hill Trail).
At the three way split in the trail, either go straight down to the creek (warning: the trail to the creek is quite steep) or take a right and then another right onto a trail that will loop back around to the park. This trail takes longer but will generally yield the largest number of birds.
The other trail begins on the opposite side of Steiner Ranch Boulevard from John Simpson Park. This is a quicker trail, but can still yield some good species. On this trail, go straight down the trail where you can venture off into the woods on the right. Once you go over the main hill, you can usually find some good sparrows and almost always find a Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay.
This location consists of mainly wooded areas with cedar (Ashe Juniper) and oak trees. There are some streams and at the bottom of the trail behind the basketball court there is a small creek. There is also a trail across the street from the park. Up to 40 species of birds have been seen in a morning at this trail--and that wasn’t even in migration season.
Stampede Hill Trail is the main trail. It is located behind the basketball court at the back of the park. This trail splits off into multiple others, one of which leads to a small creek.
The other trail begins on the other side of Steiner Ranch Boulevard. This is a smaller trail that is easier to hike and only goes less than a mile.
