Brookwood Wildlife Area

Brookwood Wildlife Area

Tips for Birding

Wear orange in the fall as people are hunting on the property even though ORCA does not permit hunting here (a sign saying such would be great). There are a number of tree stands built along the trails.

Watch out for poison ivy, there is quite a lot of it here.

Birds of Interest

The birds here include grassland birds in the meadows, swamp birds like winter wren and various birds associated with marsh and lakes: Trumpeter Swans, Pied-billed Grebes, bitterns and rails. There are also various forest types from cedar stands to thick spruce and the mature deciduous (maple) forest on the island.

About this Location

Brookwood Wildlife Area is an undeveloped park. The only trails here are maintained by the neighbors (thank you!!).

There is a parking area at 777 8 Line, Norwood, ON for about 3 cars.

It was once a scout camp but ORCA killed that when the scouts donated it to ORCA - it's sad actually. You can see the old washroom that's still standing but the various cabins have been removed. There are some of the old campsite marker posts and a few fire pits.

Notable Trails

From the parking lot, walk north on 8 Line until you come to the trail the ATV trail: this is the only actual trail here. The trail goes for 1.8 km and quite an easy walk with the exception of the old boardwalk (the boardwalk is usually underwater and is need of repairs). To walk the boardwalk wear (or bring) rubber boots and be careful as it's easy to step off of it and fall into the swamp - just be sure of each step before placing your weight. Your reward for traversing the boardwalk is access to a small island with a beautiful, mature forest and sweeping views of Rotten Lake.

There is a side trail that goes north and exits the property and enters private land. I walked it once as far as the hydro lines. There is no signage indicating it is private but it is. This side trail passes through additional forested areas.

The old camp area has some small trails but basically that's all overgrown and neglected.

I will add that 8 Line continues past Brookwood WA right through a swamp and is well worth walking (though I advise against driving it unless you're adventurous and have AWD/4x4).
