Charette Lakes

About this Location

Charette Lakes is a pair of lakes on a treeless mesa southwest of Springer. Charette Lakes are closed from November 1 through March 1.

Charette Lakes Wildlife Area is located north of Wagon Mound in Mora County. Total Acreage: 1,901 total acres. Upper Charette Lake is about 100 acres, Lower Charette Lake is about 300 acres.

Southwest of Springer, New Mexico. Go north on I-25 from Albuquerque for 179 miles going past Santa Fe and Las Vegas and Wagon Mound. Take exit to NM-569. The only place this 13-mile road goes, besides a couple of posted ranches, and up a twisty steep hill near the end, is to the lakes just up on the mesa.

Water Sports: Too weedy and shallow for swimming. Paddlecraft and car-top boats with electric motors are allowed.

Wildlife watchers are likely to see pronghorn antelope, hawks, prairie birds, and various species of waterfowl. Good binoculars are important. The best time to view wildlife is at dawn or dusk.

Charette Lakes Wildlife Area has primitive camping and rest rooms but not drinking water.
