Tips for Birding

There is a monthly bird walk held of the third Thursday of the months September through May, except for December. The small entry fee is waived for these bird walks. The Thursday bird walks begin at 8 A.M. in the parking lot behind the entry office.

The December walk is scheduled for the Houston-Baytown Christmas Bird Count.

This is a good place for seeing Brown Boobies from San Jacinto Point. The center is also a good place for seeing and hearing rails as well as a variety of sparrows in the winter and Marsh and Sedge Wrens.

Birds of Interest

Groove-billed Ani have been seen in the Center. Clapper, Virginia and Sora Rails are regulars. Wood Stork, Brown Booby, both Night-herons. Bald Eagle, Seaside Sparrow, Nelson's Sparrow Painted Bunting. During migration many warblers may be seen. 

About this Location

This whole area flooded during Hurricane Carla due to land subsidence after the subdivision was developed and houses built. This is now a park owned and operated by the City of Baytown. The Entry Office restrooms are available to visitors as well as some portable toilets scattered around.

According to the official website the site is open daily all year round except Christmas and Thanksgiving and during extreme inclement weather. Gates open 30 minutes before sunrise and close 30 minutes after sunset. This site has seven miles of hiking trails.
