The Mount Carmel State Forest was a 263-acre gift to the State of Vermont in 1956 from Governor Redfield Proctor. Located in the Town of Chittenden, the forest sits high in the heart of the Green Mountain range. Elevation of the forest range from 2380 to 3365 feet at the summit of Mount Carmel. While there is no deeded access to the forest it can be accessed by the New Boston Trail, a side trail to the Long Trail.

The forests of Mt Carmel State Forest are dominated by Northern hardwoods: sugar maple, beech, and yellow birch. Large rock outcrops and steep climbs to the summit are memorable. A fire tower was constructed on top of Mount Carmel in 1914 but was removed in 1974 due to its unsafe condition.

Recreational use of Mount Carmel State Forest is dominated by the Long Trail which bisects the forest north to south and the New Boston Trail, a side trail that accesses the Long Trail from adjacent Forest Service land. The trails are maintained by the Green Mountain Club. A VAST corridor trail crosses the southern end of the forest.
