Tips for Birding

This Hotspot includes only that portion of Garrapata State Park that is west of Highway 1 and north of Soberanes Pt. (aka "Whale Peak" on some maps). There are multiple narrow trails from multiple pull-outs on the west side of Highway 1, and one can cross the highway if parked at the main Garrapata State Park pull-off on the east side of the road (below the barn). The restrooms are adjacent to the barn.

Birds of Interest

Rocky shorebirds -- Black Oystercatcher is resident, others occur in late fall to early spring -- and migrant waders in spring or fall. Surf Scoter flocks offshore have occasionally held a rare Harlequin Duck. At times, alcids such as Common Murre and Pigeon Guillemot (summer only) may be seen from shore. The coastal chaparral has Wrentit, California Thrasher, and the resident "nuttalli" race of White-crowned Sparrow.

About this Location

Garrapata SP covers 2,939 acres, the vast majority of which is rugged inland hills, east of Highway 1, with hiking trails in chaparral, willow-lined creeks, and stands of Coast Redwood.
