Tips for Birding

There are no public “pull-offs” along Animas Creek Road but traffic is typically light. You may find a wide spot where a private driveway meets the road; if you pull off in such a place, courtesy dictates that the driver remains with the vehicle in case the property owner needs to enter or exit. The road is usually only a few yards from the tree-lined stream, which runs in spring and often after monsoon rains (when the road may be flooded). The property north of the creek is privately held. Drivers should remain focused on the road, as the entire area is open range.

About this Location

Although almost all of Animas Creek Road (County Road B050) traverses privately owned properties, the road is paved and seasonally offers excellent roadside birding. Most birders will probably prefer to enter from the east from NM-187. It is less than 5 miles from here to the intersection with Alto Road (B028), which keeps you within eBird’s recommended maximum length of travel for a single list. Alto Road connects with NM-152 but is very steep and not paved. Do record in your checklist comments where you begin and end your effort. Of course, per eBird best practices, do not include in your original list species or distance if you turn around and retrace your route;  or record one list in and one list out.
