About this Location

The Pineywoods Native Plant Center is a 43-acre area of preserved forest that Stephen F. Austin State University maintains for the collection, conservation, and propagation of endangered or near-endangered plants native to east Texas. The center boasts an extensive trail system through a dense stand of deciduous trees along Lanana Creek.

The Tucker Woods trail can be accessed at two points. One parking area is located by the Ina Brundrett Conservation Education Building on Raguet St. This access point has a short boardwalk as well as a paved trail leading down a hill into the woods, where a wooden bridge crosses a swampy area. The second access point is on Austin St. near the intersection with Raguet St. The parking lot at the SFA Construction Management building is open to the public as an access point to Tucker Woods, to which it is connected by a boardwalk.

Restrooms are available on the outside of the Ina Brundrett building, but may be locked outside of the building's operation hours.

Tucker Woods is a popular spot to find salamanders. Moist logs may have Ambystoma texanum or opacum and Eurycea paludicola beneath them. Please flip responsibly. Tucker Woods is also home to uncommon mosquito species such as Aedes hendersoni and Psorophora mathesoni.
