Burleigh Falls

Burleigh Falls

Tips for Birding

Park in the Parks Canada parking lot and scan the open water of Lovesick Lake. The open water below the dam and rapids on Stony Lake may be viewed from the bridge. A spotting scope is recommended for this location.

Birds of Interest

Waterfowl are the primary attraction at this location. The bays immediately above and below the dam remain open well into early winter and become ice-free in early spring. In all but the coldest winters at least some waterfowl congregate both below the dam and rapids on Stony Lake, as well as above the dam on Lovesick Lake. It is always a good place to check in late fall for straggling individuals (a lone Brant was present at this location into late November 2014) and in spring for early migrants. At least two pairs of Bald Eagle nest in the general area and in winter one or more may be observed perched in the tall white pines around Lovesick Lake, above the dam.

About this Location

Burleigh Falls marks the point where the waters of Lovesick Lake drop around 10 m down to Stony Lake. The dam holds back water for the operation of the Trent Severn Waterway’s Burleigh Falls Locks (No. 28) and other locks downstream to Lakefield. The lock station is located on the west side of Hwy 28 just north of the dam. There is free parking in the lot and washrooms are available during the waterway’s operating season. Consult the Waterway's website https://parks.canada.ca/lhn-nhs/on/trentsevern/visit/heures-hours for the current operating dates and times.

Formerly there was public water access and a place to scan the waters on Crown Land immediately below the rapids off the Old Burleigh Rd. on the east side of Hwy 28, but access to this site was closed in 2020. Do not park or attempt to access the water here, as violators will be charged with trespass.
