Tips for Birding

When the park is open, park in the parking lot and bird the park or walk north and bird along Asphodel 3rd Line.  Birding is the most productive in the early morning during migration and the breeding season.

Birds of Interest

The area supports a variety of species characteristic of mixed woods and maple swamps. This is a reliable spot to see Northern Rough-winged Swallows which, along with Barn Swallow and Eastern Phoebe, nest beneath the bridges over the Ouse River. Northern Waterthrush, Black-and-White and Mourning warblers, Brown Creeper, and Winter Wren all nest in the woods along the road. Solitary Sandpiper occurs regularly during migration in the buttonbush pond on the east side of the road. A singing male Louisiana Waterthrush was present at this location throughout May 2011, and Carolina Wren has been present on several occasions.

About this Location

Asphodel Park or Asphodel Centennial Park is a small (~1 ha) township park on the floodplain of the Ouse River with manicured lawns, a picnic shelter, tables, a playground, and a parking lot. Washrooms are available only during the operating season when the park gate is open from dawn to dusk. The park is closed in winter and the entrance gate is locked, but there is still room to park one or two vehicles in front of the gate.

The hotspot includes the park and extends from CR 2 north on both sides of Asphodel 3rd Line around 600 m to the edge of the forest. The forest along this road is a mix of upland deciduous and mixed forest, cedar swamp, and maple swamp; there is a buttonbush pond on the east side of the road just 100 m south of the forest edge. Outside of the park the land on both sides of the road is private and should not be entered.
