Rice Lake--Island View Rd

Rice Lake--Island View Rd

Tips for Birding

Stop at the north end of the road just south of Lakeview Rd. and scan the lake for waterfowl and other waterbirds. The small bay to the southwest often harbours waterfowl during strong west winds.

Birds of Interest

In addition to a variety of waterfowl species, this is a good location from which to observe groups of migrant Bonaparte’s Gull foraging over the lake, particularly in the fall. In spring, large numbers of Caspian Tern and gulls may roost in the heavily grazed pasture bordering the lake to the southwest and, occasionally, a few shorebirds as well. The pastures and surrounding fields support a variety of field birds and in winter, on occasion, both Northern Harrier and Short-eared Owl. At least formerly, Purple Martin nested in martin houses at the residence to the southeast of the intersection of Lakeview and Island View roads, and in the vicinity of the Island View Harbour marina.
