About this Location

East of Grand Avenue and south of CR-23, Gallinas Creek begins to make a counterclockwise arc south, passing under I-25 before turning north again toward the county road. Having made roughly a half circle, the creek resumes its southeasterly course. At that turning point, on private property only about 150 yards south of CR-23, lies a small freshwater marsh. Though there may once have been open water visible from the county road, after over a decade of drought, that now is much less likely; the area typically appears to be thoroughly populated by cattail, with deciduous trees (probably elm and Russian olive) on the far side. Between the road and the marsh is pasture.

This is mostly roadside viewing. The only place to park along CR-23 to observe the wetland is towards its west end, just east of where the county road passes under I-25 (a nesting place for swallows). The marsh is visible for about an eighth to a fifth of a mile along CR-23. Some lists for the hotspot may be recording observations for the half-mile of CR-23 from the Arroyo Pecos bridge in the east to the Gallinas Creek bridge in the west (though you can’t see the marsh from either of these endpoints). Observations made outside these boundaries should not be recorded for the wetlands. Birders are encouraged to record details of their route or stationary observation point in checklist comments.
