Cavan Swamp Wildlife Area--Stewart Line

Tips for Birding

As expected, birding earlier in the morning or in the evening is best. A goodl strategy for birding this area is to park your vehicle at several different spots and walk the respective sections of the road.

Birds of Interest

Wilson’s Snipe, both Alder and Willow flycatchers, Winter Wren, Purple Finch, Northern Waterthrush, Nashville and Canada warblers all breed here. Swamp Sparrow, Common Yellowthroat and Yellow Warbler are particularly abundant.

About this Location

Stewart Line willow swamp is the southwestern extent of the Cavan Swamp. This hotspot extends along Stewart Line for 1.4 km from the base of the hill in the east to the base of the hill in the west (vicinity of #620 Stewart Line) and includes both sides of the road. The road shoulder is wide enough in several spots to accommodate a vehicle or two. The sight lines are good and so parked vehicles should be obvious to approaching vehicles. All lands on either side of the road are privately owned, so do not trespass.
