Tips for Birding

The main specialties here - Cassin's Kingbird, Swainson's Hawk, Lawrence's Goldfinch - are most commonly found during spring, which is the prime time to visit.

You can park along the side of the road when you reach the vineyard and bird along the roadside. The trio of tall eucs and the adjacent vineyard (about 0.5 mile south of Highway 152) are often a good place to start searching for the kingbird and goldfinch. The hawks can be found soaring anywhere along the road, although they may also perch on trees sometimes.

About this Location

San Felipe Road is a road in southern Santa Clara County that often has several specialties rarely seen elsewhere in the county, such as Cassin's Kingbird and Swainson's Hawk.

There is no official parking here, although you can pull off to the side of the road and park there. The county boundary ends at the creek bridge (about 0.8 miles south of Highway 152). Towards the north end of the road, there are several houses - be on your best behavior here and try to avoid parking in that area. Most of the birds can be found farther to the south in the vineyards, so you can often avoid this area altogether.

Directions: From San Jose/Gilroy, take Highway 101 south and head east on Pacheco Pass Road/Highway 152. About 9.5 miles past the Highway 101/152 intersection, the north end of San Felipe Road will be on the right. Turn right and park/pull off on the road shoulder when you reach the vineyards.
