Early mornings and evenings with calm weather conditions are best for detecting marsh birds. The best place to pull off the road is at the cement culvert closer to the west edge of the marsh where the road shoulder is a little wider. Larmer Line can at times be surprisingly busy with local traffic so do not stop your vehicle in the middle of the road and be sure to stand well off to the side while scanning the marsh.
Characteristic marsh birds are found at this site, including Virginia Rail, Sandhill Crane, Wilson’s Snipe, American Bittern, Northern Harrier and Marsh Wren.
Larmer Line Marsh is located on the north side Larmer Line around 2 km west of Hwy 28, south of the community of Fraserville. Roughly 10 ha in extent the marsh is dominated primarily by cattails and is bordered by coniferous and mixed swamp. Mixed swamp and alder thicket swamp are found on the south side of the road. All lands on either side of the road are in private ownership, so do not leave the road.
