Tips for Birding

Park in the pullout on the north side of Paseo Real. From there, you can go north or south along the river. If you go far enough north, you'll get to a little spillway from the Water Treatment Plant. There is not really a defined trail, so make your own path through the woods.

About this Location

The Santa Fe River flows through Santa Fe and Sandoval counties. It is a tributary of the Rio Grande and provides about 40% of the water supply for the state capital, Santa Fe. The river starts in the Sangre de Cristo mountain range and passes through downtown Santa Fe, where it has a park with shaded walkways and picnic tables. The river is intermittent and only flows when water is released from two reservoirs upstream. The river has been designated as America's most endangered river of 2007 by the environmental group American Rivers, and efforts have been made to revive it and create a trail along its banks.
