About this Location

Sailors Home Cemetery, the last remnant of the National Sailors’ Home in Quincy, contains the remains of at least 119 veterans of the US Civil War.

The Home located on 6.5 acres in Wollaston, operated as a farm for 66 years, from 1866 to 1931. Established primarily for veteran sailors and marines, the home also provided refuge for former soldiers.

A half-mile-long self-guided nature walk, designed to showcase the major plant and animal species that find their homes in and around the Quincy salt marsh, leads to a cemetery with the remains of US Navy veterans housed at the National Sailors’ Home. The long rows of simple, shaped white marble stones set up a pleasing rhythm as they slope towards the marshland that overlooks Quincy Bay.
