Slough Cove, Edgartown Great Pond

About this Location

Until the Martha's Vineyard Land Bank purchased the property, the entire two miles of the Edgartown great pond barrier beach were privately owned. Visible from the beach is the breadth of the great pond to the north plus Chilmark’s Wequobsque Cliffs to the west. Access is by canoe and kayak only, which visitors themselves must supply. Private beaches are adjacent and boundary signs indicate the limits of public use.

The property can be accessed only via canoe or kayak from the town’s landing on Turkeyland Neck. To reach the landing, follow the Road to the Plains to its terminus at the Meetinghouse Road. Turn right and travel 0.2 miles; turn left here and follow the dirt road to the great pond. The ocean beach is 1.1 miles across the pond; be sure to land only on the marked Martha's Vineyard Land Bank beach.
