Tips for Birding

There is access from the bike path. One entrance is on the northeast corner of the field and another is on the southeast corner. Access the bike path by parking in the small lot on Mill Lane right next to South East Street, then walk about 2000 feet northwest along the bike path.

Or, obtain permission from the Amherst College police department to park in the lot south of Amherst College tennis courts, then walk about 1000 feet southeast along the bike path.

Wheelchair users can scan the fields from an overlook on the northeast corner.

Birds of Interest

Year-round minus late summer. Grassland and edge birds. Regular breeders: Bluebird, Thrasher, both orioles, both cuckoos, Field sparrow, Bobolink, Eastern Meadowlark. Winter: Lark, shrike. Rare: Sandhill Crane, Grasshopper Sparrow, Sedge Wren

The trails in the Nice-Looking Fields are associated with the Book and Plow Farm of Amherst College.

These are seasonally mowed fields south of the Amherst College academic campus, with an overlook area.

Notable Trails

There is a loop trail with some offshoots. The trail map is displayed at the trailhead. Not wheelchair accessible. The trail is icy and slippery in winter, and wet and muddy in spring and fall.
