Tips for Birding

Although not fully developed by the end of summer 2023, two miles of crusher-fines surfaced trail in the City of Farmington’s Among the Waters project were dedicated in spring 2022.

Parking is just south of the Bisti Highway (NM-371), on the east side of the San Juan River. From that point, the trail runs south along the San Juan until that river reaches its confluence with the Animas River. There the trail curves east, then northeast, along the north bank of the Animas River. The riparian area near the trail is formed not only by the two rivers but also by the Farmer’s Mutual irrigation ditch and city water infrastructure ways.

Plans are that trail users will cross three bridges as they journey through old willow and cottonwood bosques, with the new trail eventually connecting to the existing trail extending south in Boyd Park.

About this Location

The Among the Waters River Trail begins at Bisti Highway (NM-371) and continues about one mile to Murray Drive (US-64). The first third of the trail runs south along the San Juan River until it pivots northeast at the confluence and continues along the Animas River. This portion of the trail is unique because it not only parallels two rivers but also intersects the farmers’ irrigation ditch and city water infrastructure ways. Trail users will cross three bridges as they journey through old willow and cottonwood bosques and enjoy scenic views of the bluffs exposed by elevation changes along the way.

The City of Farmington is expanding the Among the Waters Trail to join the Centennial Trail near Boyd Park. When completed, Farmington will have 4.5 miles of connected river trails from the Bisti Highway (NM-371) to the Animas Park, Browning Pkwy Bridge (NM-516).
