Tips for Birding

This area is great for roadside birding, with occasional stop to scope ducks. It seems to be a magnet for interesting birds - from Say's Phoebe to Vermillion Flycatcher. Best thing is to drive down Steiner past the dirt company. Once past that, keep your eyes peeled. Turn right when you get to Renner Rd. Be sure to check out the Santa Cruz cemetery.

Birds of Interest

Ducks, shore birds, Bald Eagles, Horned Lark

About this Location

Steiner Rd. is a dirt road. It used to be just plowed fields that got interesting shore birds after a rain. Now it is a major area for dirt excavation which produces large quarries. Currently (winter 2023) there are huge mounds of dirt in some areas obscuring your line of sight to the water.

Renner Road has a cemetery that can be a good spot. Then there are older, more established quarry lakes that will often have ducks.
