Trent River--Asphodel 5th Line

Trent River--Asphodel 5th Line

Tips for Birding

Although some waterfowl is nearly always present at this site, the greatest diversity and abundance occur from March through mid-April. Satisfactory views of some waterfowl may be had with binoculars, but the larger congregations are often at some distance and so a spotting scope is recommended.

Birds of Interest

Waterfowl are the primary attraction at this site. Twenty species have been recorded from this vantage over the years, with most species observed annually. Particularly large numbers of Canda Goose, Common Merganser, Common Goldeneye, Ring-necked Duck and Bufflehead congregate along the ice-edge as it recedes westward up the lake, usually in March. Both Mute and Trumpeter swans often congregate in the ice-free areas of the river during winter. Numbers of both have been increasing in recent years and now 20-30 of each may be expected. One to several Bald Eagles of various ages are frequently observed at this location in winter and a pair has now nested for several years in the general vicinity.

About this Location

Like Asphodel-Norwood 6th Line, the 5th Line is also a dead end/right-of-way that offers good views of the east end of Rice Lake near its confluence with the Trent River. It is a good spot for lingering waterfowl in winter and migrants in early spring.  Dependent on winter snow accumulations, there may be a sizeable windrow left by the township plow at the end the 5th Line, making snow boots a benefit. It is possible to back into the driveway of the nearest seasonal residence (#1182), but it is often best to back up to the next nearest driveway or all the way to Maguire Rd. Note that aside from the boat launch at the shore of the river all land on either side of the road is private and should not be entered.
