Pfeiffer Big Sur SP--Hwy 1 bridge

Big Sur, California 93920

Tips for Birding

The Highway 1 bridge across the Big Sur River is a sub-location within the larger Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. If you are camping or staying at the Big Sur Inn, you may include this trail within your eBird checklist for the State Park in general. However, if you are driving Highway 1 and wish to check the Big Sur River from the Highway 1 bridge, then please use the sub-location to give more precise mapping to the birds found at this site. Please note that as an eBird sub-location, you should only include birds seen or heard from the on or below the bridge — please do not use this sub-location to record birds elsewhere in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. The is a large existing Hotspot for this State Park.

There is a wide parking area on the western shoulder of Highway 1 just north of the bridge over the Big Sur River. The bridge is a busy two-lane paved road, so be very cautious here, but there are pedestrian walkways on the both the west and east side of the bridge.
There are also steep dirt trails, sometimes muddy, that go under the bridge, but you need to be in good shape to scramble down or up them, and you may encounter poison oak enroute.

Birds of Interest

The two major birds of interest here are American Dipper and Common Merganser. Both are  shy, and the mergansers tend to fly when they see people. The dipper often nests under the bridge in May-June, and often has a youngster nearby in July-August. At other times you may be lucky to see one flying up or down the river, or foraging upstream and downstream of the bridge.

Some years ago, a few California Condor joined a roost in a tree over the Big Sur Inn, which is located on the north bank of the river adjacent to the large paved parking lot. When that roost was in use, a condor sighting was more predictable than it is now. Currently, seeing a condor overhead takes a bit of luck and time in the field. In summer, watch for Purple Martin overhead. At any time, Wild Turkey may be along the edge of Highway 1 in this vicinity, and even sometimes in your parking spot.

About this Location

This tiny sub-location is often checked by local birders when visiting the Big Sur region. Parking at the highway edge and walking on the bridge, though, is not good for groups and the walkway over the river is narrow. It is much easier to use the trails within Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park that are south of the river, which are reached by wide pedestrian bridges at the Big Sur Inn, or not far upstream at the parking lots. However, to use these easy-access trails, one must enter the State Park and pay the day-use fee. If you chose that option, there are multiple public restrooms in the park. It is generally best to avoid the crowds in the State Park during good weather in summer, and at times the parking lots will be full.
