Tips for Birding

It's easiest to start in the first (most southern) part of the park where the boat ramp is located. Scan the lake (a spotting scope would be very helpful) both left and right (south and north) from the boat ramp area to see what you might find.

Drive through the campground checking the ground for sparrows and other ground feeding seed eaters. Keep an eye in the tree canopy for woodland species and, especially in the spring, migrating passerines.

Then continue north along the lake edge to the northern campground area and the swimming area at the base of the southern end of the dam.

After exploring this part of the park, head up and over the dam, driving slowing to continue to look for birds on the water.

Once off the dam, you can drive in on the many "fisherman" roads that dot this far northern edge of the lake. Unfortunately, you will be looking into the sun from this part of the lake in the winter making birding and scoping the southern shoreline more difficult.

At the far, far, far western end of Fife Road, right before it takes a hard right turn to head north back out to Hwy. 87, there is one last overlook and boat ramp. This boat ramp will be dry when the lake levels are lower, but this is the up-creek end of the reservoir and might be good for waders and other shorebirds.

Birds of Interest

Waterfowl, shorebirds, gulls and waders in the wintertime.

Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Common nighthawk, Chuck-will's-widow, Black and Forster's Terns, Western Kingbird and Scissor-tailed Flycatchers during the spring and summer.
