Park somewhere at Academy Drive and walking north is probably the best way to bird. Walking along the ditch is productive, and there are a couple of great agricultural fields, one on the east side (Wagner's cornfield), and one on the west side just north of Rome Lane. The one at Rome Lane is flooded weekly in spring and summer and can be good for ducks, shorebirds, and egrets. There is a good woodlot at the ditch and Rome Lane, and a couple of good orchards on the east side by the Wagner's field, where Lewis' Woodpeckers sometimes hang out in the winter.
Corrales Lateral is a canal that runs along the western edge of the village of Corrales. It is part of the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District, which provides irrigation water to farmers and residents in the area. The canal was built in the 1930s and has a capacity of about 200 cubic feet per second. The Corrales Lateral is also a popular recreational trail for walkers, bikers, and horseback riders, who enjoy the scenic views of the Sandia Mountains and the Rio Grande Valley.
