Birds of Interest

Hawks, hawks, and more hawks! This site can be great for hawk watching, especially in the winter. Ferruginous, Red-tails, Rough-legged, Northern Harriers, and American Kestrels can all be seen. Ferruginous tends to be the predominant species in the winter. Bald Eagles seem to be becoming regulars out here in the winter, too. A Short-eared Owl was found near the northern portion of the road one winter and Burrowing Owls can be found during warmer months. During migration, the Prairie Dog colony areas can have Upland Sandpipers and Long-billed Curlew. There is a man made retention pond on the west side of the road that is not accessible but will have geese and waterfowl flying in during the winter.

About this Location

This birding hotspot is roadside birding only. All of the properties off of the road are private. Boles Road is unpaved and consists of loose gravel, but is graded regularly and is easily drivable with any car. Additional gravel is regularly added and graded so the ditches on either side of the road are substantial in places. Due of this, there is almost nowhere to pull off the road except in front of gates. This road is not usually heavily travelled, but please be mindful to not block the road. This hotspot is mostly surrounded by agricultural land and has a sizable Prairie Dog colony on both side of the southern end of the road. Canyon Lake 6 and Yellow House Draw downstream of Canyon Lake 6 hotspots are to the west and Fiddlewood Road/County Road 2900, Buffalo Springs, and Ransom Canyon hotspots are to the east.
