Tips for Birding

Despite the park’s long history, this hotspot was created just in 2020 and has been but lightly birded.

About this Location

Located just a few blocks from old downtown Las Cruces, the one-city-block (about two and a quarter acres) Pioneer Women’s Park occupies the heart of the Alameda-Depot Historic District. Thus, the park is surrounded predominantly by historic houses in a very clean, well-kept residential neighborhood.

Originally developed in the last decade of the 19th century by the Las Cruces Woman’s Improvement Association, that organization continued to improve the park after deeding it to the city in 1924, planting many trees and shrubs there during the Great Depression. The grounds, including a centrally placed gazebo originally built in 1898, benefited from major renovations in the 1970s and again in 2022. As a result, there are trees, both deciduous and evergreen, of varying maturities dotting the turf.

The park signage is at the corner of Las Cruces Avenue and Reymond Street. Parking is usually easiest on Reymond.
