Tips for Birding

Arrive at opening time and visit the (enclosed!) bird blind. This is a good spot for scrub jays, towhees, and hummingbirds. Then, take the East-West Trail from the parking lot for warblers, vireos, etc. Check the streams for Louisiana Waterthrush during the spring.

Birds of Interest

Tropical Parula - has been present for a few years now during spring migration, along second creek of East-West Trail

About this Location

Lost Maples State Natural Area covers 2,174.2 acres in Bandera and Real counties. It is north of Vanderpool on the Sabinal River. About 200,000 people visit the park each year.

Some trails are steep and rocky and have uneven footing and water crossings. There is one bird blind next to a parking area.

Notable Trails

For views of the Tropical Parula (present spring 2023-2024 at time of writing), take the East-West Trail and wait at the second creek crossing. The parula should be flitting around the trees near the path. You'll likely hear it first.
