Tips for Birding

Consider Salineño hotspots for similar habitats and species in a safer area.

About this Location

This hotspot is the end of a dead-end dirt road that provides views of Fronton Island, in the middle of the Rio Grande. As of fall 2023, the habitat on the island (and the reason for wanting to bird here) is being cleared.

Per eBird checklist comments via Ken Blankenship:

Was advised by US Border Patrol that the river road and frontage are not a good place to be, not even in daylight hours.

Per Wikipedia:

In 2023, Fronton Island became a hotspot of human trafficking and drug smuggling. On September 7, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham determined that the land was state property and granted the Texas Ranger Division permission to patrol the island as part of Operation Lone Star.[11][12][6] In an interview with Fox News, Commissioner Buckingham characterized this declaration as an addition to the state's land area.[13] Under the direction of Texas Governor Greg Abbott, the Texas Ranger Division and Texas Army National Guard occupied Fronton Island on October 2, 2023, and began clearing its vegetation ahead of patrols.[12][11]
