Chino Canyon

Chino Canyon

Tips for Birding

Take plenty of water.

About this Location

Chino Canyon found its way into birding lore with the first US breeding record of Black-capped Gnatcatcher. It is a beautiful canyon to bird but a four-wheel drive high clearance vehicle and some nerves of steel are required to reach it. To reach the canyon, take the I19 frontage road south of Green Valley to Elephant Head Road. Just beyond the turnoff to Mt. Hopkins, this road becomes S. Canoa Road. Take this to Hawk Way. At the end of Hawk Way, you will turn onto S. Monarch Way and follow it to the end where it becomes primarily a dirt track with several rough stretches such as across Madera Wash. At some point you will simply want to park and walk the rest of the way.
