About this Location

Watershops Pond, also known as Lake Massasoit is the second-largest body of water in the city of Springfield, after the Connecticut River. The lake has 7 miles of shorelines and covers 186 acres. Watershops Pond was created by damming the Mill River, which flows from the west end of the lake to the Connecticut River. The lake was named after the Watershops, a facility that was built by the Springfield Armory in the 19th century to house heavy equipment for making weapons. The Watershops was closed in 1968, but the original building still stands on Allen Street. Watershops Pond is bordered by Springfield College.
