About this Location

Elevations in the Dos Cabezas Mountains Wilderness range from 4,080 feet to 7,500 feet, allowing for a variety of plant and animal life, as well as excellent recreational opportunities. Visitors will find a diverse terrain consisting of steep mountain slopes, granite outcroppings and vegetated canyon floors. Administered by the BLM, the 11,700 acres of rugged and remote environment provides outstanding opportunities for hiking, backpacking, primitive camping, rock scrambling, and sightseeing. The higher mountains and ridges offer outstanding long-distance views of the Sulphur Springs Valley, San Simon Valley, and numerous other mountain ranges.

Indian Bread Rocks Picnic Area, at about 4200 FAS, is the access point to the Dos Cabezas Mountains Wilderness. Although there are no wheelchair accessible trails within the picnic area or wilderness, the vault toilet at the picnic area is wheelchair accessible. Grills and shaded picnic tables are available, but no water. The area is popular for dispersed (primitive) camping, partly because the road is kept in such good shape, though significant rains can cause washouts, especially along the mile directly before the picnic area.

The picnic area lies 20 miles east of Willcox and 7 miles south of Bowie, Arizona, in Cochise County. From Bowie, travel south on Apache Pass Road then 3 miles west on the dirt road, signed as Happy Camp (Canyon) Road. Though Happy Camp Road is fenced on one side for part of its way, roadside birders should look out for free-range cattle. Vegetation is typical desert scrub of low-growing mesquite, chamisa, and soaptree yucca.
