Tips for Birding

MIA-POW Park is one of 9 hotspots along Roswell’s Spring River Parkway, a jogging and biking trail roughly following the Spring River waterway course. The park is comprised of two right-triangle-shaped properties, each a little over a half acre in size, with the Spring River channel forming their longest sides or western boundaries. Parking is on the east side of the northernmost triangle, off Pennsylvania Avenue, though ample parking is also available across Pennsylvania from there, south of De Bremond Athletic Field. With the exception of the athletic field and its paved parking, the turfed park is surrounded by houses, many with large trees;  this is very much an urban park.

The park includes various tree species, both deciduous and evergreen. What is really special is that water is more likely to collect in the grassy and weedy base of the concrete-and-rock-sided channel here than in the watercourse running through other hotspots along the Parkway. As a result, waterbirds (for example, sandpipers in winter) may be seen at this park when not observed at other Parkway hotspots. One of the nice features of this hotspot is that it is easy all-day birding. Although you tend to be looking west at your birds, due to the turf level and depth of the channel relative to the tree line and housetops, you won’t be caught just birding silhouettes in the late afternoon.
