Derived from the Spanish term for “white rock”, Peña Blanca is a community of about 600 residents in north-central New Mexico. Its 7 square miles are surrounded by Cochiti and Santo Domingo Pueblos. The village is built mostly on the upland at the margin of the Rio Grande floodplain. The greater part of the village lies directly east of the Cochiti East Side Main Channel. West of the Channel is floodplain, and further west between the East Drain and the Rio Grande, is bosque.
